CLAN MACTHOMAS AND ITS AFFLIATED SEPT CLANS

It is assumed that the original MacThomas Clan Families were part of the
Clan Chattan Mackintoshes during the 15th century. When the Chattan Confederation
became large and unmanageable several MacThomas families and their friends
left the area (Badenoch) and traveled across the Grampians to Glenshee. They flourished
in this area and became known, in part, as McComie, McColm and McComas.
The government in Edinburgh first identified the group as MacThomas
in the Poll of the Clans in the Acts of the Scottish Parliament of 1587 and 1595.
The Chief of the Clan MacThomas was mentioned again in Government proclamations
in 1678 and 1681 but by then the clan was drifting apart and soon became a
"broken clan". Speculation of their migration at that time showed some going
to the Tay valley and changing their name to Thomson or into Angus and Fife where
they became Thomas, Thom, or Thoms.
It is further speculated that by
the 18th century some had become prosperous merchants in Aberlemno near Farfar
while others had moved toward Aberdeenshire.Since written records are somewhat
limited and many variations in spellings exist, it is difficult to determine the
exact movement of individual families. We do know that the names of MacThomas
and all of it's septs have been documented throughout much of Scotland and Ireland
and are found, today, in North America.

Our association recognizes the greater family of MacThomases as being global in scope
and celebrate all of our ancestors who have journeyed to North America, settled
and thrived. We also recognized with heart swelling pride, their courage
in leaving home and hearth, their privations, their strong "Scottish" spirit and
their belief in a better way of life for us; their descendants.
