Our Association History

fancygreenknotborder.gif

We are an independent, incorporated, Scottish heritage association of the greater MacThomas, and Sept families. Our Association was formed in January, 2002.  Prior to that time, many of us were members of the Clan MacThomas  Society of Scotland. We were experiencing problems with the Society. A large number of members voted to detach and form the North American Association.

Our Association is not unique in our separation from the Society; indeed, it is quite normal to throw off foreign control and set our own sense of direction.

Since earliest recorded history some of our ancestors were associated with the Clan MacIntosh and some were in the Clan Chattan protectorate; all of  them were in a valley in the South Central Highlands named Badenoch. Attaining prosperity and security were salient points for our ancestors. Skirmishes between Clans, vague boundaries, wars with neighbors, and other negative influences led them on the migration path. Most migrated North and West toward Inverness and into Northern Ireland, eventually to Canada and the United States Others went East of Scotland and continued in agricultural pursuits in and around Glenshee.. The 1600-1800s were periods of movement for the Highland Scots.

The GlenShee “Clan”, in the 17th century, became broken and was dissolved. These families took on various associated Clan names as they migrated further to the East and mostly settled in the Lowland Shires.

We recognize the revived “Clan MacThomas” as found in Scotland and now linked to Andrew MacThomas of Finegand their current Chief and President of the MacThomas Society .

Our association, MacThomas North America, Inc. is proud of our Scottish roots and heritage, researching and developing our ancestor’s history, and compiling a record of their migrations to these North American lands where freedom prevails!

We recognize our ancient families are now found around the world. With heart-swelling pride we consider their courage in leaving hearth and home for the unknown, their privations on the journey, and their belief that they were providing a better chance at life for us: their descendants!

These days you will find your extended, original families in most parts of the World; your association has members in most States, Canada and two in Germany!
